2015 小樽・鉄路・写真展

｜ここで待っている／ここからつながっていく｜熱転写プリント／綿布｜2015｜

北海道最古・日本で3番目に長い歴史を持つ鉄路・旧手宮線を舞台とした野外写真展に、今年も写真を持って帰ってきました。

夏と秋の間の空の下に写真を解き放つ二週間。海から港から吹く風と、森から山から下りてくる風が交わり、その間を錆びたレールが貫く… 長年変わらない景色の中にも、日々変わり続けるものがあります。この会場も一昨年遊歩道として再整備されましたが、昔からあるものと新しいものが交わり、馴染み始めてきています。
変わっていく街の景色の中で、目印のようにいつもそこにあるものがあります。それは目立つ形や大きさ、姿をしているものもあれば、そうでなくひっそりと存在していたり、時には形のないものもあったりします。この『鉄路展』の会場では、例えば横たわり伸びるレール、沿線の倉庫の深い茶色の壁、夏草、昼の暑さと夜の肌寒さ、虫の声、どこか違う時の流れ……。街を歩けば、細い路地、空気と水の吹き溜まり、製缶工場のサイレン、路上のチョークの落書き、ネオンサイン、坂道、突然海が見える場所、潮風だけが通り抜ける柵、いつかの記憶……。
僕にとっての”街を歩き、撮ること”は、そんな、いつもそこにある存在を探し見つけることです。そして、この街を歩く最初か最後に必ず港に行くのです。
近代の小樽は港が世界に開かれることによって大きく発展しました。航路の行先に世界の都市の名前が刻まれた古い地図を見るまでもなく、この港を、水面を見ていると、世界のどこにでも繋がっているような気持ちになります。
遠くを見れば、長い防波堤に当たり砕ける白波が見えます。それは遠くのどこかの景色が伝わってきたもの。そのどこかの誰かが、小樽を思っているかもしれない。

「ここで待っている」は、小樽の街の空気を湛えながらそっと静かに待っているような光景を。
「ここからつながっていく」は、小樽の港の水面の中に、遠くのどこかの海を港を思う時間を。

風に吹かれ、時には雨に打たれる写真展だからこそできることにも、挑みました。

あなたを待っている、あなたからつながっていく光景と時間が、この『鉄路展』に、そしてこの小樽の街のどこかに、きっとあります。

[Otaru Open-air Photo Exhibition in Former Temiya Railway 2015]
I came back with my photos to an outdoor photo exhibition set on the Former Temiya Railway, the oldest in Hokkaido, the third longest historical railway in Japan.
Two weeks to unleash photos under the sky between summer and autumn. The wind that blows from the sea from the harbor and the wind that descends from the forest from the mountains intersect, and rusted rails penetrate between them. Some of the scenery that has not changed for many years is changing every day. This venue was rebuilt as a promenade two years ago, but it has begun to blend in with old ones and new ones.
In the changing landscape of the city, there are things that are always there, like landmarks. Some are prominent in shape, size, and form, others are quiet, and sometimes have no form. At the exhibition venue, for example, the rails that lay down, the deep brown walls of the warehouses along the railroad, the summer grass, the heat of the day and the chill of the night, the voice of insects, the flow when something is different … As you walk through the city, you’ll find narrow alleys, air and water pools, sirens in canning factories, graffiti on chalk on the streets, neon signs, slopes, places where you can suddenly see the sea, fences where only the sea breeze passes, and memories of some day.
For me, “walking and photographing the city” is always searching for and finding such beings. And always go to the harbor at the beginning or end of this city walk.
Modern Otaru has greatly evolved with the opening of the port to the world. Rather than seeing an old map with the names of the world’s cities engraved at the destination of the route, looking at the port’s water surface makes you feel like you are connected anywhere in the world.
Looking far away, you can see the breaking white waves hitting a long breakwater. It is something that somewhere in the distance came. Someone there may be thinking of Otaru.

The artworks “Waiting here” is a scene where you are quietly waiting while filling the air of the city of Otaru.
One more, “Connecting from here” means a time to think of the port somewhere in the distance on the surface of Otaru Port.

I also tried what I could do only because of the photo exhibition that was blown by the wind and sometimes hit by the rain.
The scenery and time waiting for you and connecting with you will surely be in this Railway Exhibition and somewhere in the city of Otaru.
