2019年の夏の終わり。小樽へ、そして『2019 小樽・鉄路・写真展』へようこそ。北海道最古、全国でも3番目に長い歴史を持つ鉄路、旧手宮線。139年前からこの街の日常を一本のレールでつなぎ、歴史にしてきた場所を舞台とする野外写真展に、今年も写真とともに帰ってきました。

「鉄路展」の出展者は、この一年、様々なところへそれぞれの旅をしてきました。僕ももちろんその一人です。
年に一度同じ場所に集い、一人ひとりの一年の旅で見たものを伝え合う。そこに一人ひとりの様々な旅人が集まってきて、それぞれの旅の景色の一つになってまた次の目的地へと向かっていく。そういう場所、そういう写真展だと僕は思っています。

どうして旅をするのでしょうか。”そこに行きたかったから”、ではないでしょうか。
それは綿密に計画を立てた先にたどり着くこともあれば、大まかな行き先は決まっていても、その途中で偶然にして居合わせて出会った眺めかもしれません。
僕の旅はどちらかというと後者の例が多いです。そこに旅のおもしろさを感じますし、なによりもその景色を見ることができたからこの旅が点と点のつながりを超えたひとつながりのものとして記憶に残るのです。

結果として、僕はそこに行きたかった。その眺めを見たかった。そして、見ることができた。目に見えているものは、つまりその連続なのだと思います。
画面の中で世の中のだいたいのものは見ることができるようになっても、そこに行って見る、そして、本来の目的や予定になかったものと景色の発見で、旅を、日々をつないでいく。
“ここを撮ってくれ！”という景色ではない場所も、自分にとって”ここを撮っておきたい”と感じる場所ならば、そこに自分は行きたかったのだという気持ちにつながるはずです。

そこに行きたかったから、やってきた。旅って、きっとそういうものではないでしょうか。

2019.9.2　ウリュウユウキ

[Otaru Open-air Photo Exhibition in Former Temiya Railway 2019]
Welcome to Otaru, and “Otaru Open-air Photo Exhibition in Former Temiya Railway 2019(TETSUROTEN)”. Here is the oldest railway in Hokkaido, and third oldest railway in the country. Since 139 years ago, the city’s daily life has been connected with a rail, and I have returned to this historical place every year.

Exhibitors at the “TETSUROTEN” have traveled to various places over the past year. Of course I am one of them.
Gather at the same place once a year and share what each person sees during their yearly journey. Each one of the various travelers gathered there, becoming one of the scenery of each trip, and heading again to the next destination. I think that’s such a place, such a photo exhibition.

Why do you travel? Isn’t it because I wanted to go there?
It may be a well-planned destination, or a rough destination, but it may be a view that you happened to meet on the way.
There are many examples of the latter in my travel. I feel the excitement of the trip there, and above all I can see the scenery, so this trip is memorable as a connection that goes beyond the connection between points.

As a result, I wanted to go there. I wanted to see the view. And I could see it. I think that what is visible is that continuity.
Even if you can see most of the world on the screen, you can go there and see it. Go.
If you feel that you want to take a picture of a place that is not “Let’s take a picture here!”, You should feel like you wanted to go there.

I came because I wanted to go there. Isn’t it true that traveling is something like that?
