2016 小樽・鉄路・写真展

｜たどりつく／また旅に出る｜テトロン生地に昇華プリント｜1800×600mm｜2016｜

ここ手宮線は、北海道最古・日本で3番目に長い歴史を持つ鉄路です。この街の昔と今がつながる場所を舞台に開かれる野外写真展に、今年も写真を持って帰ってきました。

初めてこの写真展と出会ったのは、まだ東京に住んでいた頃、夏の旅で北海道にやってきた時でした。天井も壁もない、錆びたレールと夏草だけがある空間に写真が並び、見せる人も見る人も自由にそこにいる…写真ってこんなに自由なものなのだと感じた衝撃が、僕自身今に至るまで写真を続けている原動力のひとつです。
季節は夏の終わり。吹き抜ける風は昼間には暑くても、夜にはかなり冷えるようになります。海からと山からの、そして昔と今の空気が出会う小樽の街で、それが最もいい比率でブレンドされているのがこの場所だと僕は思います。そして、ここに汽車が走っていた頃にも、窓を開けて同じように混じり合う空気を感じながら旅をした人がきっといたことでしょう。
港町である小樽には、それこそ数えきれぬほどの旅人が訪れ、旅を始め、また終え、あるいは次の目的地へと旅立っていきました。旅人の顔を、そして背中をたくさん見てきた場所です。
僕は、「後ろ姿の見える写真」を撮りたいとずっと思っています。時に顔よりも饒舌な表情を見せる後ろ姿。声高ではないけど、その瞬間に至るまでの物語が垣間見えるような。

「たどりつく」と、「また旅に出る」。
海辺を歩くと、たくさんの漂着物…流木やプラスチック片に出会います。全く違うところを旅立った誰かが、この場所で出会う。そして別れていく…そんなふうな姿に感じられます。そして、暮れていく頃に港の端に立って水面に遥か遠くを思う時、ひとりひとりが旅を続けている後ろ姿が見えてきます。もちろん僕も、あなたも、そのひとりです。

昨年初めて、風に吹かれる写真に挑みました。この場所に15年毎年帰ってくる中で、ようやく”たどりつけた”景色でした。
今年はこの2つの光景にすべてを込めました。他のどこにもない空気の中で、”また旅に出る”までの時間を過ごそうと思います。

あなたがこの街に、この場所にたどりつき、そしてまた旅に出るまでの時間が、心動くものでありますように。

[Otaru Open-air Photo Exhibition in Former Temiya Railway 2016]
The Temiya Line is the oldest railway in Hokkaido and the third longest railway in Japan. This year, I came back with a photo to an outdoor photo exhibition set in a place where the city is connected to the past and present.

I first met this photo exhibition when I was still living in Tokyo and came to Hokkaido on a summer trip. Photos are lined up in a space with no ceilings and walls, only rusted rails and summer grass, and there are people who can show and see them freely … I felt the shock that photos were so free. It is one of the driving forces that have continued photography until now.
The season is late summer. The breeze can be hot during the day but cool down considerably at night. I think Otaru is the place where the air from the sea and from the mountains, and the air from the past and the present, meet, and this is where it blends in the best ratio. And even when the train was running here, there would have been someone who opened the window and felt the same mixed air.
The port city, Otaru, was visited by countless travelers, who began, ended, or traveled to their next destination. It is a place where I have seen a lot of travelers’ faces and backs.
I’ve always wanted to take a “back view photo”. Back view sometimes showing a more verbal expression than the face. It’s not loud, but it gives a glimpse of the story leading up to that moment.

“Getting there” and “Going on a trip again.”
As you walk along the beach, you’ll encounter lots of drifting objects … driftwood and plastic pieces. Someone who has traveled in a completely different place meets here. And parting … I feel like that. And when you stand at the edge of the harbor at sunset and look far away from the surface of the water, you can see the back of each person traveling. Of course, me and you are one of them.

For the first time last year, I challenged the wind-blown photos. After returning to this place every year for 15 years, the scenery was finally reached.
This year we put everything into these two sights. In the air where there is nowhere else, I will spend time until “going out again”.

May the time you get to this city, to this place, and to travel again, be move your mind.
